Tell us about Northland eBikes' story and what makes you different.
"The business began in 2010, residing in its current premises since 2016. The current owners purchased the business in 2019 and have expanded both the physical size of the shop, built out eCommerce in a new website and evolved into many more products. The most notable being regular 'analog' bikes are now part of retail sales & workshop servicing. Go further with Northland eBikes, more than just an eBike shop :)"
What's your speciality in the Northland cycling scene?
"Northland eBikes is the only eBike specialist north of Auckland. All other bike shops are regular bikes first, ebikes second; we're the other way around, but that doesn't deflect from our capability on regular bikes. Northland eBikes is fully certified with Bosch & Shimano's respective eBike systems; again, we're the only shop north of Auckland to maintain that annual certification."
How long have you been working with Cube, and what attracted you to the brand?
"Northland eBikes has been dealing in CUBE eBikes since before 2019 and regular bikes since around 2023."
Which Cube models are your top sellers, and why do Northland riders choose them?
"The CUBE Kathmandu (EE) is hands down the leading CUBE eBike sold by Northland eBikes. Closely followed by the Reaction, various versions, as a great all-around eBike. We often kit them out with guards, kickstands etc. Thirdly is probably the Stereo, various versions, the 120 in particular has been an attractive proposition for Northland customers."
Any standout customer success stories with Cube bikes?
"The Cube Kathmandu delivers. We've had many success stories; in fact, not one single negative comment has ever been made about this eBike. The Kathmandu has enabled customers to commute, to adventure and to sometimes just enjoy a local ride. A small group from Waipu traversed the Timber Trail on their Kathmandu's, all we did was put on new 'knobby' tyres and off they went. First-timers on the trail and the Kathmandu ate up the grade 3 ride, much to their pleasure. A versatile eBike that I am sure gets used in a greater array of situations than the Germans envisioned."
What's your favourite local ride to recommend to Cube owners?
"The best Trail in Northland is the Twin Coast Cycle Trail - Pou Herenga Tai. You can find details here - https://twincoastcycletrail.kiwi.nz/ Around Whangarei, ride up the Te Kamo shared path and/or cycle around 'The Loop' and/or head out to Onerahi on the cycleway and around the Waimahanga track. For more adventure, try the Glenbervie forest or indeed for the MTB crew, the Parihaka maunga provides for some thrills!!"
What services set your shop apart from other retailers?
"Northland eBikes is the only Bosch certified bike shop in Whangarei. We have up-to-date diagnostic capability and unmatched experience with eBikes across the region. From our fully equipped workshop, we are capable of servicing and supporting all CUBE bikes or any type. Suspension servicing can be done with RockShox. Bike fitting is always done on new bikes. Our workshop runs on a booking service, and typically we turn around bikes within the same day for regular servicing. The only time it may take a little longer is when parts need to be ordered in."
Do you offer special perks for your customers?
"Yes. Northland eBikes provides a first service free of charge, and ALL subsequent servicing for the customer and their bike is discounted by 35%. On occasion, we run free maintenance sessions for customers after hours. Northland eBikes also works closely with Bike Northland to ensure our customer base is aware of all the events they organise and deliver."
Where's your favourite post-ride stop in Whangārei?
"We have many :) Probably the best shout is the 'town basin', where the fantastic Hundertwasser museum is located. There are plenty of cafe & restaurant options and it's easy to access, being directly on 'The Loop'."
What are your essential accessories for every bike purchase?
"We always speak about 3 'must-have' items and strongly recommend every new bike owner have these: Helmet, Lock (a good one) and a Pump (preferably a floor pump)."
Your advice for first-time eBike buyers?
"Be honest with yourself about what you're going to be doing with the bike. All too often, we see people buying elsewhere and getting completely the wrong bike for what they want to do. The classic one is trying to turn a full suspension eMTB into an easy entry trail bike....."
How do you see cycling's future in Northland?
"Cycling continues to be a popular pastime in the north, but the lack of decent cycleways on roads and only 1 'significant' trail there is a growing concern that the appetite may wane. Pending the political winds and other stakeholders' level of investment interest, there is plenty of opportunity in the north to bring more cycling infrastructure with increased usage from both locals and visitors."
